Serve the Person, Not the Profile

Triage People

We say people are our business. Then we triage them.

The prospect who “looks like a buyer” gets our best. The one who does not gets our leftovers. The team member with polish gets developed. The rough one gets managed. We do this quietly, quickly, and mostly without noticing. And it is costing us more than we think.

The Three-Second Sort

Every leader and every professional runs an instant calculation when someone walks in: how much is this person worth to me? It feels like efficiency. It is actually a filter that decides who gets the real version of us and who gets the transactional one.

Here is the problem. People can feel which version they got. Long before they can articulate it, they feel whether they were seen or sorted. And they make decisions about trusting you based on that feeling, not your credentials.

Transactional Is a Treadmill

When business becomes purely transactional, the only way to grow is volume. More calls, more leads, more activity, more everything. It works until it exhausts you, and it never builds anything that compounds.

Serving people as humans first, regardless of what they look like, what they drive, or what they appear to be worth, does something different. It turns interactions into relationships. Relationships compound. Transactions do not.

The Operator’s Version of Love

This is not soft. Loving people well in business looks like full attention on the small client. It looks like the same preparation for the meeting that “does not matter.” It looks like developing the person nobody else invested in. That is not charity. That is how trust is actually built, one degree at a time, and trust is the highest-leverage asset in any organization.

The leaders and professionals who stand out over decades are rarely the ones who worked the most files. They are the ones people never forgot how it felt to work with.

A Question Worth Sitting With

Think about the last week. Who got the sorted version of you instead of the seen version? What would change in your business, your team, and honestly your own energy, if everyone got the same one?

That is not a productivity question. It is an identity question. And it might be the most practical one you answer this month.
